Just my thoughts on EXPO 11...

Date and time
I think June or late May is a good time..
Weekend before Memorial Day perhaps? 28th & 29th?
Expo 10 was well planned, I couldn't make it to Expo 9 because it was on a Monday and a Tuesday during the month of May, Work, School, Finals, May Madness.

Expo 10 fell on a weekend which made it easier for most people, atleast thats what i think.

This issue with weekends are always:

Dates- Most groups (NASA, Chin, etc) run the same dates every year. That limits the amount of weekend dates available.

Cost- Weekend dates are substantially more expensive than weekday events.

That's true, weekends are tough dates to snag at many tracks. The previous years events usually are given first dibs on those dates. The reason we were able to get some nice dates at Autobahn this year was partially due having the event there last year.

I agree though, I like the event better on the weekend, and this if from an organizer's perspective. We sold out the event in roughly a week (except instructor/advanced).

This could also be a result of how late the registration was originally opened.

All were contributing factors. Regardless, weekend dates are better if they're available and attainable financially. We all know that, and that's something we factor into our decisions.

Does anyone have info on transporting a car that way? Something other than the private-price haulers that would run ~$700-1000/car the last time I checked. I'd be interested in being there, but would not be interested in driving a non-AC stickered up track car 3000 miles into summer Cali/Western heat. I do not see myself going if I don't have a decent car to drive there.

Hey Adam, thanks for chiming in here!

That's a good point, a majority of us would benefit from researching that. Mike/Migs...any input from past experience?

I know Don/Jack spec'd out transportation from VA/SC a ~year ago when they were planning to hit up some west coast tracks. It would be cheaper (obviously) if you could split the costs with others. The hard part there is many of us are spread out.

From a theoretical standpoint, a group of people could meet at one location to load up the cars and then get a ride home. Same for return delivery.

Exactly. Try to hire out a private hauler and load up a few cars on it. Then meet locally and load them up. Driving 100 mile or so would be the ticket. Then fly out from that location to cali

That would actually be pretty neat, I'd do expo if it wasn't going to rob a week of vacation time.

The hottest locations for a New York, to California Expo road trip in the summer will be: Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico. If you get lost and wind up in Phoenix though, that will be the hottest. Go through Flagstaff.

I finally jump-started #450 and took it out for a drive from NoVA to the Philly/Allentown area last weekend, to say hello to "D", and burn some old gas. :)

Was sort of funny having Matt tell me to turn on the A/C or radio (during the drive up to Allentown). haha

If this is held in Mid-Ohio or on the East Coast again, I won't be able to make it. If this is held in CA, I will be there for sure. I've wanted to go to an Expo for a while now, and I've never tracked my car. It's only 5 hours away and a little over 300 miles whether it's Willow Springs or Buttonwillow, so I'm down for either place.

Some of you guys seemed concerned about theft on the West Coast, but this little tidbit from the Willow Springs site is a deal sealer for me:

Attention All Customers:
If you would like to RENT a GARAGE for your event weekend, which includes electricity, air compressor hookup, shelter, and a way to lock your vehicles and valuables in a safe place, all for only $175 for Friday-Sunday. Please Call 661-256-6666 for reservations. Based on availability.

Does anyone know what dates are we looking at? The only times I wouldn't be able to do would be July 18th-August 1st.

We don't have concrete dates...yet. We usually try to find a date that fits the following criteria:
- weekends (more expensive and tougher to get)
- during the summer/off time for students
- decent weather for the region

We're able to have a July date in Chicago, but that same month would not be fun for something in say Georgia or Alabama. We take all of that into consideration.

I'm the exact opposite unfortunately. I highly doubt I will be able to get the time off of work to be able to make the trip worthwhile.
