I was talking to USAA (my insurance company) a week ago or so, and asked about coverage IF I were to decide to drive at the Expo or other HPDEs. I told them that is was an educational event, an instructor would always be in the car, etc, etc. I also made it clear that I was only considering the possibility of driving. The rep told me that she would have to refer this to an underwriter for an opinion, and she would get back to me.
Yesterday I got a call back, and she told me that not only was I not covered if I participate, but that they had decided not to renew coverage of my R, whether I decided to drive in HPDEs or not, the choice was not mine, I could no longer obtain coverage from them for that car.
I have been a USAA member for about 20 years, and have 2 cars, 2 boats, and my house insurance with them, in addition to a credit card. It seems weird that they would risk all my business just because I considered participating in an HPDE. I would expect this type of thing from Geico, but I've always considered USAA one of the best. This kind of thing just encourages their customers to lie to them
I am currently awaiting a call from the underwriter to explain the reasoning behind this decision to me, I find this completely unacceptable, and will most likely be changing insurance companies unless they aquire some sense. I would have accepted a statement that I would not be covered while driving in HPDEs, I would have even tolerated a statement that they would no longer cover the car if I chose to drive in HPDEs, but to refuse to cover the car even if I promise not to drive in HPDEs?!?!
So, two questions for everyone:
1) Does this even sound remotely logical? Is this the way you expect an insurance company to behave? Or do you think there might be some terrible miscomunication happening here?
2) What insurance companies do you have experience with in these types of situations, and what do you think of them? (I will likely decide to change companies).

Sounds like a load of crap to me. It's one easy way for them to keep their "special" users accident free. The real catch to having the "lowest" rates like Progressive always advertises is to kick your butt to the curb at the slightest hint of anything besides grandma driving.
State Farm isn't the cheapest, but their underwriting crew explained to me that if I participated and turned in a claim, that I would be covered, but most likely dropped. That's reasonable. I don't expect to turn in a claim from the racetrack. No other "increase" in rates or anything else has occurred. I've just been more careful when I still had a big loan on the kaa...
fwiw - I've been with the same State Farm agent since I began driving and have had a hail damage claim, but no accidents.
