Exhaust

OK, I know this has been discussed a million times in some variation or another on this site, BUT, I'm going to risk my naivety anywho......
My '98 ITR is stock (sans K&N air filter). I was talking to an exhaust guy who was putting on muffler on my daughters '97 Integra when I mentioned my ITR and the fact that I wouldn't mind a freer flowing exhaust WITHOUT sounding like something out of Fast & Furious - don't desire more volume - and not sacrificing drivability. I'm assuming that, since so many of you have aftermarket systems, the engine management systems on the motor don't get out of synch with all the inherent changes of the new system, right?
In any case, the 'exhaust guy' suggested a magnaflow CAT as a start; said it would improve flow, not be louder to any significant degree, and would give some noticable improvement in ?power/drivability?. Do you think it is worth it? Are there Dyno figures that verify this improvement? Or should I just leave well enough alone, since I'm basically not into doing any real drastic alterations from stock anyway......

Joe,,, If you have kept it stock this long, let it continue to stay stock.

Not there is any thing wrong either way, but one modification leads to many. And then you know what happens to your pockets? Empty :roll: :lol:

well it isn't really much of an upgrade to go from a stock itr exhaust to say...an apexi worldsport. changing to a highflow cat will help but as was mentioned by rob...if you've been happy this long...then just making a little change like this won't do anything for you...you'd want to upgrade more and more.

the only issue with questions like this is that everyone has their own opinion of what is too loud...just the same with ride stiffness in regards to suspension. how about chaning your exhaust manifold to the jdm one and then mate that to a jdm length high flow cat? if that doesn't satisfy you then maybe a cat back upgrade would be necessary.

Thanks for the thoughts guys; food for thought.......probably will keep it stock unless I NEED to replace something, then will reconsider.

Iteresting question, from what I know ITR models already have 30% improved exhaust comparing to GS-R. Well I heard that installing comptech header will improve some mid torque performance comparing to stock ITRs and there is also no significant difference in sound at all. but what about cat and cat-back? What kind of catalytic convertors should be installed? I heard test pipe is loud and also gives problems during emission test. So I just would like to know opinion of ppl on this forum what type of cats and cat backs ITR owners prefer. I just came up with this question because I could never really get answer on it, ppl just ingore me whenever I ask :(

Never really heard too much about a comptech header. If you stil want to retain the stock prestiege, I suggest you just get the JDM ITR header. Flows much better then the USDM counterpart. And its a stock piece, engineered by Honda. You will not pass any emesions test with a testpipe, as it does not filter the exhaust fumes at all. Some will also add the fact that it polutes the enviroment and is a punishable by a severe fine if ever caught being used on the street. It is not street legal anywhere. For exhausts themself, most of the distinct sound will be a direct result of the muffler and resonators. With the muffler having the most effect. The Apexi World Sport is one of the quieter aftermarket exhausts.

Tnx Neo u gave me a really good info of what I asked, but one more thing as you said "JDM header" is that something like original japanese DC2 parts or something? And how can I get them? do I have to like special order them form Japan Honda motor co.? Is it expensive comparing to aftermarket parts of US?

The JDM ITR header is the stock header that came on Integra Type R's that were sold in Japan. They are tubular, much better then the cast iron USDM ones which came stock on our cars. Im not sure if Honda of Jpn still stocks them, or wether it will be cheap to order/ship from them. Everyone that I know that has one, just purchased it online used from a US store. It will generally run you lower then most aftermarket headers. Check the following stores for this header's availability if you are interested:

It's easy to come by and can be found if you are a smart shopper for under $400 shipped Brand new.

You will need to spend $ on a Cat converter that will accomodate the 2.5 to 2.25 along with the length.

BUT.

It does free some power but the stock exhaust still restricts at the bottle neck. So like I said... Stay stock. ( Unless you want to spend a decent amount of $ do all the proper upgrades and changes)

SMSP or Hytech, those two systems are custom made and tuned for what you have done to the car. I have seen both in person and well they leave me speachless.
